The Chelah at Rabat, Morocco
The Chellah, at Rabat, Morocco, was originally a Roman fortress and munitions storehouse, built at the top of a hill overlooking the mouth of Bou Regreg river. Located at Rabat, Morocco, solid, stone walls stand tall around a sizable piece of property situated alongside a modern highway. After the Romans abandoned the site it was used by a Sultan Abu I-Hassan as a place for monuments, tombs, and a mosque. In 1755 the Lisbon earthquake damaged many of the structures within the forbidding walls. Today those walls surround gardens and the architectural remnants of ancient times, serving mainly as a tourist attraction.
